A shocking case out of Florida drew national attention after authorities accused a 15-year-old boy of murdering his mother following an argument over his school grades. According to investigators, the teenager allegedly strangled his 46-year-old mother, Gail Cleavenger, during the early hours of Friday morning after tensions escalated over a reported D grade. Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood described the motive in a single word: “Rage.” The incident has stunned the local community and raised difficult questions about youth violence, family conflict, and mental health.
Police said the argument began late Thursday night after Cleavenger informed her husband, who was away on a business trip in Washington State, about the teen’s academic performance. Authorities allege that around 12:30 a.m., the boy entered his mother’s bedroom, woke her up, and strangled her with a rope. Sheriff Chitwood told reporters that the teen later confessed to the killing and walked investigators through the details of the crime and subsequent cover-up.
According to investigators, the teenager used a wheelbarrow to transport his mother’s body to her truck before driving it to River City Church, where he allegedly buried her in a fire pit. Authorities claim the teen then enlisted the help of two 17-year-old friends to conceal the crime. The three teenagers allegedly staged a burglary scene at the family home, hiding electronics and ransacking the residence to mislead investigators into believing a break-in had occurred.
The situation unraveled later that afternoon when the teen returned home from school and called 911 around 3:52 p.m. to report the supposed burglary. When deputies arrived, they found the front door kicked in, the house in disarray, and Cleavenger’s truck still running in the driveway. Sheriff Chitwood said investigators became suspicious during interviews with the teen because he appeared overly confident and attempted to direct the investigation toward his own theories about what had happened to his mother.
“He believed he was the smartest person in the room,” Chitwood said during a press conference. “He continued to tell us his theories of what he believed and why, what happened to his mom and where we should be focusing our attention.” Eventually, authorities said, the teen changed his story, confessed to the murder, and implicated the two other boys who allegedly helped bury the body and stage the fake burglary.
All three teenagers were taken into custody. The 15-year-old was charged with first-degree premeditated murder, while the two 17-year-olds were charged as accessories after the fact.
